A General Flowchart for the WSSP in AP Biology

Students in Mr Jones' AOS (Research Side) and in Advanced Placement Biology are participating in scientific research in molecular biology. Dr. Andrew Vershon at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology, Rutgers University collaborates selected NJ high school teachers of advanced sciences in effort to sequence the genome of Wolffia australiana,  also known as "Duckweed". With generous grants GE Healthcare and the National Science Foundation (NSF), Dr. Vershon's Waksman Student Scholars Program (WSSP) is one of few programs where teachers and students work alongside university researchers to learn how to apply modern principles of molecular biology in the natural world in effort to publish DNA sequences on the NCBI server, an international 'bank' of genetic sequences. This program allows me to step away from typical "cookbook" type labs that are so common in academia from elementary school to college. As a result, students in AP Biology with Mr. Jones and those involved in WSSP have a chance to learn how modern molecular biology is conducted and in addition, officially publish their genetic sequences on the NCBI server.
